Within our alternative provision, learning is not a straight line from start to finish. Instead, we like to think of our approach as an open world; where curiosity leads the quest and every young person gets the chance to level up in their own way. Lego plays a powerful role in this adventure so what better time than on International Lego Day to talk about how and why we incorporate it in our setting.
As every Lego fan will tell you, Lego allows young people to build far more than just models. They build communication, confidence and problem solving skills one brick at a time. With Lego therapy trained staff guiding the process, we invite young people to work together as a team in sessions that are carefully structured to support collaboration. Everyone has their own role; designer, builder, communication lead as examples, and success only follows when learners support each other. Along the way, staff model positive language and support emotional regulation to help young people navigate challenges when plans do not go as expected. A failed build is not game over - just a chance to rethink and try again.
This approach is especially effective for learners who struggle in more traditional classroom settings as it offers a hands on, low pressure way to experiment and experience success without fear of failure. Using Lego thoughtfully and purposefully, we create a learning environment where every young person can build essential life skills and enjoy the sense of achievement when a shared creation is completed. It becomes a real power up for their self-esteem and also opens doors to additional STEM based learning where education feels like an adventure in worlds of their own creation.
